Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, X – the Evo is definitely one of the top sports cars for under 20000, but we found less than a hundred of Evo IX and only several Evo X for sale in all the US under 20K. Is this enough to include the Evo on this list? Cast your vote! Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS – wait for a year or two. As of now, they are priced higher. Volkswagen GTI – plenty are available for under 20000. The GTI is a fun to drive FWD hatchback with a turbocharged engine and a nicely done interior. The 0 to 60 time is 6.1 seconds. Reliability is not great. Is the VW GTI really a sports car? Should it be included on this list? Vote! Mazdaspeed3 – widely available fast FWD hatchback with a 2.3L turbo engine. The 0 to 60 time is under 6 seconds. Reliability is OK. Is it one of the top 10? Vote! Pontiac GTO 2004-2006 The GTO is a rear-wheel drive 2+2 coupe with a 5.7L or 6.0L V8. The GTO is a rebadged Australian Holden Monaro that was based on the European Opel Omega. It’s basically a European-looking version of an American muscle car. Mazda RX-8 – handles very well, redlines at 9,000 rpm and sounds great doing it. The 0 to 60 time is 6.4 seconds. The short manual shifter is excellent but… There is practically no torque off the line and would you really recommend the RX-8 to a friend unless he or she is willing to learn all the tricks of driving and maintaining a rotary engine? Mazda MX-5 Miata – It’s a good candidate for a top 10 fun-to-drive cars, but it’s a very small two-seater and it’s not really fast. If you are over 6″ tall, you are going to have a hard time getting in and out of this car. Plus, the 0-to 60 time is about 6.8 seconds. Dodge Challenger 2009-2011 RT/SRT8 – nice one, but you are going to have to wait for a few months. Currently, only a very few V8-powered Challengers are available for this price. You can easily find the 2009 or 2010 Challenger SE, but it comes with a 250-hp V6. Pontiac G8 – gorgeous car riding on the same platform as the Camaro. Plenty are available for this price. Cast your vote. Acura NSX – Yeah, right. The lowest price is $44,000. Porsche Cayman – excellent rear-wheel drive, rear mid-engined two-seater; currently priced around 30K and higher. Porsche Boxster / Boxster S 2000-2006 –  nice one, the 0 to 60 time for Boxster S is around 6 seconds. Still, it’s more of a roadster, isn’t it? Vote! Pontiac Solstice GXP / Saturn Sky Red Line 2007-2009 – These twins come with a turbocharged 260-hp 4-cylinder engine. The 0 to 60 time: 5.5 seconds. Audi TT – there are plenty of 2000-2006 Audi TT for sale, but it’s really not that fast. The 0 to 60 time is in the 6.7 – 7.4 seconds range. The 2008 and newer TT is faster, but only a few of them are available for this price.

No Subie love, huh? It’s a shame. I would have to argue that Subarus are no doubt one of the best buys for under $20k. Reliable, fast, awd(a necessity in the northwest) and such a variety of cars you could get for the price too.

Being a guy that used to appraise every trade-in that came into my dealership, I’ve driven a lot of different cars. So many cars, in fact, that there are very few late-model cars that I haven’t driven over the last 15 years. For a guy who likes cars, it was a cool job.

There are subcategories within every vehicle segment, but no more so than among sports cars. The design, performance, and usability spectrum is vast, with each automaker tailoring their halo models to a well-defined buyer group. For this reason, it’s difficult to say one sports car is better than every other. Instead, we’ve decided to pick our favorites among five categories, with five unique consumer personas.

Beyond that, our approach was the same. We developed a list of potential cars, using Kelley Blue Book prices as a guideline, then chased down specific examples via or car clubs. We invited the owners to join us for a day at GingerMan Raceway in western Michigan—so trusting, these guys—then spent the day driving their cars around the circuit and on nearby public roads. As with the inaugural derby, we added two of our favorite new cars to the mix, this time a Mazda 3 and a Mini Cooper, each available for less than $20,000.

It’s not as refined as the BMW but it’s good looking and a deal for well under $20,000. Powered by the same motor as the Nissan 350Z and built on the same platform, it’s essentially a sports car in a suit. The sound the V6 makes is like music and there is a huge aftermarket of go-fast parts for these cars.

Checking in well under the $25,000 barrier, the Cooper Hardtop is one of those cars that’s all things to all people. Want a rolling fashion accessory? The entry-level MINI fits right in on Rodeo Drive. Want a great city car? Few cars are better for tight urban maneuvers. How about a car that’s fun on your favorite back road? The Cooper’s racing heritage sees to it that you’re taken care of there. And 40 mpg is easily within reach, so we can’t even complain that the MINI requires premium fuel.

There is a great deal truth in that article. I acknowledged some of this suggesting that you get a warranty with the car (The Audi S4). Being a financial blog and a list of cars that give you more smiles per dollar the S4 is a hard to beat for $20,000. Some of the cars mentioned in Ezra’s article are extreme examples. The technology used in construction and electronics of the top of the line Mercedes S class, the BMW 7 series or the Audi A8 is the culprit to blame for rapid depreciation and high maintenance costs. The S4 is a glorified A4 with a big V8 under the hood. No aluminum construction. No controversial iDrive. As for the Cooper S versus GTI argument… you could flip a coin on that one. Not to beat a dead horse but this is a financial blog and VW can’t touch the resale of the Cooper S.

Unlike last year’s roundup, we didn’t attempt to rate the cars. Entertainment—always a top priority at Casa C/D—was the guiding selection factor. Which one appeals to you is a matter of your personal priorities. That’s why our group again ranges from a purist’s sports car such as the Honda S2000 to an SUV such as the Chevy TrailBlazer SS, where fun manifests itself in different ways. Always nice to have choices. Nicer still to be able to afford them.

This is an easy one for me, as I’ve owned a few myself. Dollar-for-dollar you won’t find a better drop-top for the money. There’s a reason this is the best-selling convertible of all time. It’s the definition of a sports car: lightweight, well-handling and, most importantly, fun to drive. Add reliability and affordability to the mix, and this car can compete with cars costing twice as much.

The low-slung coupe uses sharp creases, carbon-fiber accents, and a mid-engine layout to distinguish itself from lesser sports cars, but it doesn’t command attention in the same way as rivals. Its 5.2-liter V10 delivers 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Acceleration is blistering: 0 to 60 mph takes less than 3.0 seconds and top speed is a towering 205 mph.

This iconic pony car is widely available and we even found a few SVT Cobra and Shelby models for under $20,000. The Mustang is more of a straight-line-power muscle car with 2+2 seating, although it handles well even with the solid rear axle in the back. Ford offered an independent rear suspension (IRS) in the 1999-2004 SVT Cobra, but the old-school solid rear axle works just fine and fits better into the Mustang “raw power” image. The V8 offers plenty of torque and sounds terrific. The Mustang is for the most part reliable and not very expensive to maintain. The interior could be more refined, but if this doesn’t bother you, it’s a great affordable sports car. The 2003 Mustang GT accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.
