Currently we have to change out 3 batteries per vehicle every 6 – 8 months due to heavy amp draws our equipment placed on the lead batteries. We decided to go ahead and purchased 2 – SB100 lithium batteries from Smart battery and have been happy we did. Our coach has enough battery power to run our lights and TV as long as we need and have not turned off on us yet. When we camp in cold areas the batteries keep our heater running all night whereas before our generator would cut on in the middle of the night to recharge the lead batteries. We absolutely love the batteries and recommend them for anyone looking to upgrade there coach batteries.

Lithium-ion (and similar lithium polymer) batteries, widely known via their use in laptops and consumer electronics, dominate the most recent group of EVs in development. The traditional lithium-ion chemistry involves a lithium cobalt oxide cathode and a graphite anode. This yields cells with an impressive 200+ Wh/kg energy density and good power density, and 80 to 90% charge/discharge efficiency. The downsides of traditional lithium-ion batteries include short cycle lives (hundreds to a few thousand charge cycles) and significant degradation with age. The cathode is also somewhat toxic. Also, traditional lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire safety risk if punctured or charged improperly. These laptop cells don’t accept or supply charge when cold, and so heaters can be necessary in some climates to warm them. The maturity of this technology is moderate. The Tesla Roadster uses “blades” of traditional lithium-ion “laptop battery” cells that can be replaced individually as needed.

Now, aside from the damage to your bank account, all the disadvantages can actually be resolved through thoughtful engineering. Lithium Pros is another maker of 12-volt lithium batteries, which are direct replacements for typical car batteries and provide the kind of power output required to turn a starter motor. The prices we found for their batteries carry an even higher premium. The Lithium Pros 12-volt, 20 amp-hour battery weighs only 9 lbs, but costs over $1000, which is much lighter than the equivalent lead battery, but at a very high cost.

@duckland, I tried to make it clear that the 7 amp-hour battery prices were simply being used to illustrate the price difference. A 7 amp-hour battery wouldn’t be sufficient for a modern car with all the gizmos they have. Maybe. As @EvDriver said, it might be unnecessary to have anything more than a DC-DC converter. My electric motorcycle conversion doesn’t have an accessory battery, only a DC-DC. But on my electric car conversion I do have a 12v lead-acid battery, but it’s useful to have a 12v source available even when the car is “off” because some of the circuitry that would turn the car “on” would need a 12v source. The main reason my car has a 12v accessory battery is that one person I trust for advice said they’d seen cases where DC-DC converters flicker off at times, and it’s useful to have the 12v battery to even out the voltage on the 12v system.
