Honolulu Car Rental

Your Guide to Honolulu, HI A trip to Honolulu, Hawaii involves much more than flying into the city and spending a week on the beach. Most visitors to this island getaway find themselves wanting to explore the sprawling city as well as the bulk of the island. With some of the best prices on cheap rental cars in Honolulu, CarRentals.com can help you discover the 50th U.S. state in style. History of Honolulu Hawaii—and therefore Honolulu—was originally ruled by a monarchy. By the 1840s, King Kamehameha III, working with American missionaries, began modernizing Honolulu. Buildings sprang up along the main street, and settlers opened businesses. While Hawaii did not become a state until 1959, the U.S. annexed it as a territory in 1898, five years after the Hawaiian monarchy was toppled. Following its admission as a state, tourists began to flock to Honolulu to enjoy its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and deeply ingrained sense of history. Beach Living Let’s be frank: When you rent a car in Honolulu, you’ll probably hit the beach first. The famed beaches of Waikiki are only 3 miles south of downtown Honolulu, but they can be overwhelming for visitors who are hoping for peace and quiet. Locals know that the best beaches are little-known secrets that remain mostly calm and tourist-free. Consider a 15-mile drive to Lanikai Beach near Kailua, or Malaekahana Beach 35 miles north. The drive to Malaekahana Beach takes about an hour, much of which is along Kamehameha Highway’s scenic Highway 83. This drive alone makes a Honolulu car rental extremely worthwhile. There are no active volcanoes on Oahu, but if you want a little heat in your life, you can visit the iconic Diamond Head Crater 6 miles to the south. A walk along the rim reveals a breathtaking view of Waikiki and the surrounding Pacific Ocean. About 25 miles north of Honolulu is Pearl Harbor, where you can pay your respects at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, as well as tour the U.S.S. Missouri. Sun and Sand Honolulu is famed for its beautiful, consistent weather. You’ll enjoy temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees year-round, though there are occasional temperature spikes into the 90s. Even winter is warm and pleasant; the lowest recorded temperature was 52 degrees, and that was back in 1969. The rainy season is from October through April, with the bulk of Honolulu’s 17 yearly inches of rain coming during that time. Still, rain showers during the summer are not unexpected, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself waking up to a rainy day in July. Tropical storms and hurricanes also crop up during the summer, though the latter are rare. Driving Through Paradise With such cheap deals on car rentals through CarRentals.com, you may think your options would be limited. Think again—you can find discount deals on everything from compact cars to convertibles to cargo vans. You’ll find vehicles through such widely recognized brands as Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, and much more. Cons: I came to visit a family member in the military. The car rented to me had expired tags and registration, so I was unable to get onto the base. I called the rental company and told them about the situation. They suggested I drive back to Honolulu, which was over an hour from where I was, to get a new registration or new vehicle. I refused to waste any more time driving back. I had to park the car a few miles away at a location that would allow it, and pay for a ride back, so I was unable to use the vehicle. I ended up returning the car early and still had to pay for a day’s worth of keeping it. I was also charged over double the price of the booking price I made online.
