Fastest Car In The World

The all-new, gut-punchingly expensive Bugatti Chiron (which reportedly starts at $2.6 million but almost certainly doesn’t stop there, given the nearly endless customization options) isn’t even the fastest Bugatti road car in existence—at “just” 261 mph, Bugatti’s newest model is the slower than its outgoing, 267-mph Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. Of course, the Chiron’s 8-liter, quad-turbocharged, 1,500-hp W-16 engine is electronically limited to 261 mph; remove that limiter for a top-speed run, like the brand initially did with its various Veyron iterations, and you can bet the Chiron will keep climbing. (Plus, as with the Veyron, Bugatti is sure to keep pushing the top speed limits skyward with each successive Chiron variant.) A couple things are for sure: first, Bugatti is very interested in claiming—or keeping, depending on how you keep score in the murky world of top-speed records—the title of “world’s fastest production car”; next, they definitely want their newest model to eventually hold that title over an aged-out car, because it’s hard to get well-heeled customers to part with several million dollars for a new car if it’s only second-best to the old one. So while 261 mph is the stated top speed for the Chiron, the truth is that no one really knows how fast this car can go—but the most likely answer is “faster still.” In any case, the 2017 Bugattin Chiron rightfully claims the title of the fastest new car in the world in 2017.

This year, the massive Bentley Continental Supersports claimed the title of fastest four-seat car in the world with a top speed of 209 mph, besting even dedicated sports cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 (199 mph) and the Audi R8 V10 Plus (205 mph). Despite a curb weight over 5,000 pounds, the plush, opulent living-room-on-wheels is properly motivated by Bentley’s stalwart, 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine producing a whopping 700 horsepower and 750 pound-feet of torque. And you get the sort of niceties for which the ultra-luxury brand is known, like a NAIM sound system, high-touch chrome and aluminum brightware, acres of leather and wood, and cabin silence befitting a meditation retreat. Plus, because it’s not only the fastest four-seat car, but the fastest road-going Bentley ever, you’ll find carbon-fiber bits everywhere from the side mirrors to the front splitter to the optional engine cover. If you want to fly by the 200-mph mark with three friends in tow, this is the only car on this list that can take you there.

The CCR is an earlier generation of Koenigsegg’s cars, but it still manages to be one of the fastest. Not to mention, the Koenigsegg was the first ever production vehicle to beat McLaren’s 8-year streak as the fastest production car on the market. The car comes equipped with a large and powerful 4.7-liter V8 Engine that is capable of generating 806 hp and 920 lb-ft torque. According to manufacturer estimates, the vehicle can zoom from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds and can complete a standing quarter mile of 9.7 seconds at 146 mph.

Comparing claimed speeds of the fastest production cars in the world, especially in historical cases, is difficult as there is no standardized method for determining the top speed and no central authority to verify any such claims. Examples of the difficulties faced were shown up in the dispute between Bugatti and Hennessey over which car was the world’s fastest.

To keep things on the level, there are some conditions for inclusion on this list. First, it has to be a street-legal production car (by reasonable definition) from a major manufacturer—so a low-volume or limited edition version of an existing car is fine, but a one-off or aftermarket-tuned experiment doesn’t count, nor does a dedicated track specialist like, say, a Ferrari FXX K. Next, it has to be new: only model year 2017 cars or newer will be considered. Last, since this is a broad survey of the current state of speed, only one car from a given brand will be included; if a badge has several vehicles that could conceivably make this 205-mph-and-up list, only the fastest vehicle will rank.

THE fastest production car in the world today is the Hennessey Venom GT. It reached a world-record speed at the Kennedy Space Centre, although the trial was not run twice in opposite directions to account for wind. To this day, the record has not been officially broken, and this classy, powerful car remains on top.

In 2014, a Hennessey Venom GT was recorded as exceeding 270.49 mph (435.31 km/h), but as the run was in one direction only, and only 12 cars (+ 1 prototype) were ever made and thus it does not qualify under the Guinness Book of Records or this list’s criteria as the world’s fastest production car. Guinness accepted it as production car, however.

Although, Koenigsegg isn’t a household name in the world of supercars, like Bugatti or Ferrari, it has managed to develop quite a reputation over a short period of time, beating the best supercars in the market. And, the Agera R model is a perfect example of the brand’s might and power that blows all other supercars in the storm with a top speed of over 273 mph, faster than any other supercar you will find on the market today. This is why it’s also known as the fastest car in the world currently.

The Bugatti Veyron held the Guinness World Record for being the fastest supercar in the world for years and was the first ever production car to exceed the 250 mph mark. However, after facing a few technical difficulties, its title was taken over by the Koenigsegg. This is when Bugatti introduced its Super Sport model that has a max speed of 268 mph.

Coming second in the world’s fastest cars category is the Hennessey Venom GT, which is a relatively new name in the industry, but has generated quite a buzz in a short period of time. The car is based on a modified Lotus Exige and has a max speed of 270 mph (just 3 mph less than the Koenigsegg). As a result, the vehicle will terrify anyone upon first glance, as it is purely a beast.

This weekend’s Texas Mile event saw a heavily modified Ford GT from M2K Motorsports hit 293.6 mph, the latest in a round of standing mile and other events where a Ford GT comes to dominate everyone. The old Ford GT is, in my opinion, now the fastest car in the world.
