Page 1 of 12 A funny thing happened to the cheapest brand new cars a few years ago: they got really, really good. For the most part, electing to spend $15,000 or less on a new vehicle gets you a surprisingly high quality automobile compared to the same price point just 10 years ago. Gone are the badge-engineered jalopies sitting in the lineup to keep up appearances and to serve as loss-leaders, and in their place are a fleet of fuel-efficient, occasionally stylish, and almost universally competent entry-level rides. Sure, each of the automobiles on this list is on the small side, but that’s what many budget-conscious buyers are looking for – a car that is cheap to buy, cheap to operate, and easy to drive in a city setting. Let’s take a look at 10 of the cheapest brand new cars currently available in the United States.

We often get asked what the cheapest cars on sale in the UK are. It’s a difficult question to answer – an increasing number of buyers opt for finance deals, which makes the overall OTR price much less important than it used to be. There’s also a “new vs used” argument at this price point. If you have £7,000 to spend, would you be better off in a very basic new car, or a more upmarket second-hand one? That’s something this feature might help you work out. All of the cars in this gallery can be bought new for less than than £10,000. In fact, the cheapest car starts at less than £6,000 for the entry-level model. Good news indeed. It’s worth pointing out that we’ve used the very lowest prices for each of the cars. That means you get a very basic product – in the case of that first sub-£6k offering, you don’t even get a radio as standard. Prices are correct at the time of writing in June 2017, but they do fluctuate. More importantly, some manufacturers are more open to negotiation than others – haggle a bit, and these bargain motors might get cheaper.

The 2016 Nissan Versa sedan has long held the title of the cheapest brand new car in America, for a time even dropping under the $10k threshold in a bid to attract new customers. The current edition of the Nissan Versa sedan offers a CD player, an AUX input, a trip computer, air conditioning, and steel wheels in its least expensive form. It also comes with a 109-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that can be counted on to deliver 27 mpg in stop and go driving and 36 mpg on the highway when matched with its standard five-speed manual transmission. In addition, the Versa features a significant amount of interior room, especially for rear seat passengers, when compared against other subcompacts.

The 2016 Toyota Yaris has long been a player in the battle of the cheapest brand new cars, and this status holds true for the current model year. The Toyota Yaris subcompact hatchback is predictable but not dull to drive, and the base L trim comes with Bluetooth connectivity, a relatively loud CD-capable stereo system (with a USB port), power door locks, a trip computer, and air conditioning. The Yaris makes do with a 1.5-liter, 106-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and a five-speed manual is also along for the ride in L edition of the car. Fuel economy is respectable (30 mpg in stop and go driving and 37 mpg on the highway), and cargo space can be expanded in the two-door model to 15.3 cubic feet.

11 Comments FRANCIS MCMASTER Absolutely nailed it. I’ve driven the ’16 Versa and a comparable Ford subcompact, the Versa was 5 stars, Nissan is making great cars. The Ford was hypersensitive handling and braking, and uncomfortable. Mitsubishi has skipped model years before; that’s troubling, and 3 cyl. with 78 hp is not a confidence builder! Great job, Thanks! Reply Trey What’s so troubling about a skipped model year? Reply Ron Ablang No Honda Fit? Reply G.E. Miller Nope – it was #11, if memory serves correct. Reply william harris i have a 2013 chevy spark its comfortable and affordable it has good MPG Reply A The Toyota Yaris iA (previously Scion iA) could have made the list. Surprisingly great car for the price. Reply G.E. Miller The Yaris is on the list. If there was a slightly different configuration of the same model, I included the cheapest version of that model on this list (in this case, the “L”). Reply A Good point, I didn’t consider that. The iA is actually a different model that Toyota absorbed from the Scion line, and it’s actually built by Mazda (the Mazda 2 isn’t offered in the US). Not sure why Toyota threw it into the Yaris line. The original hatchback Yaris is a bit cheaper, though. Reply Steven Gallagher Thanks. I like the comparison of the Auto Trans. Reply D. Miller The Mitsubishi might have a stronger warranty but look luck getting any of their dealerships to honor it. Crappy cars and warranty is worthless. Reply Vv Would not buy any of them. The sonic was great in last model with more horse power parents have one. If I needed a new car this year I would have to buy a hold over 2016 sonic if possible, Jump up a notch whats 3000 more over 10 years? 300 a year or 25 a month. If you settle you will probably trade out soosooner have a 23 yo vehicle. If I had cheaped out by a mere 1500 when new I would have been out of it long ago. The 1500 upgrade paid off in the end as I will have it yet a few more years. Reply

The 2016 Ford Fiesta sedan represents the least expensive way to get into the Ford lineup, and it’s also one of the better-handling of the cheapest brand new cars available. The Ford Fiesta comes with attractive, extroverted styling both inside and out, as well as very similar equipment when compared to the base Spark: AUX-in stereo system, air conditioning, and power windows and door locks. It also provides outstanding fuel economy in entry-level trim (28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway) thanks to its 120-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and its five-speed manual transmission.

Though the 2016 Kia Soul edges over our desired $15,000 price point, it may still be worth the splurge. The Soul is the only crossover vehicle on this list, a tall wagon that provides a funky break from the hatchbacks that typically clamor for attention as the cheapest brand new cars. The Kia Soul’s roomy passenger compartment (up to 61.3 cubic feet of total cargo space) also comes with features such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a USB audio interface. The crossover squeezes 130 horsepower out of its 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual transmission is charged with corralling that output and sending it to the Soul’s front wheels. Fuel mileage for the Kia is listed at 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
