Big Chief New Car

Last month Street Outlaws celebrity and real-time Oklahoma drag racer Justin “Big Chief” Shearer crashed his 1972 Pontiac LeMans drag car during a drag race, the same car he’s had since he was 16-years-old. Well according to the Big Chief himself, the cat is out of the bag as earlier Thursday during the 2015 PRI (Performance Racing Industry) Trade Show, Justin unveiled his reincarnated Crow turned into a promod car. Luckily for us, MidWest Street Cars off of youtube published the entire video reveal for all of us to see. Check that video out below.

It’s back to basics on the newest episode of Street Outlaws. Concerned about Dominator’s take off in his turbo car, his colleagues decide it’s time to send him back to school. Big Chief and Boosted sat him down to go over the ins and outs of proper turbo starting line procedure, and it wasn’t pretty. Coach Chief laid into him, making sure no past mistake was left unmentioned. Yet, when it came to race night, his take off still left a lot to be desired. His car went into a wheelie right out of the gate in both of his races, letting his opponents slide up the list.

Meanwhile, Chief decided to do something new. Convinced he had finally put together the fastest team of street racers in the nation, it was time to put OKC to the test. He called on California, New York, and Detroit to put up their five fastest cars to see truly who was best. The teams agreed, also mentioning they weren’t bringing any promods with them. Deciding it would be unfair to compete with the Crowmod, Big Chief decided to sit this one out and the let the team carry itself.

He could easily have been killed, though. “The Crow saved my life,” he said, a testament to the work Don Dial Race Cars did when building its rollcage. Even from his hospital bed, Street Outlaw’s Big Chief promised to be back. “My wife, Allecia, brought my computer to the hospital, because she knew I would want to read the data from that pass . Then she gave me the hospital’s Wi-Fi log-in.” She knew he’d want to start looking for a new car as soon as possible.

For Big Chief, his whirlwind year of racing in the NHRA and the Mega Race are going to come to an end. If he wants to get back to the top of the list, he is going to have to build another new car. Add in the Mega Race build and this could be the toughest season for one of the 405’s best.

While Azn works to supe up his Dung Beetle, the list racers of the 405 get ready for their penultimate meet up of the season and no one is as race-hungry as Chief. Determined to make his way to the number one spot, Chief took on anyone who would let him.

Daddy Dave was a no-show for race night despite his determination to reclaim #1 with his own car. As are the rules of the OKC, Big Chief and James Goad were both allowed to call him out and win by default, sliding into slots 4 and 5 respectively while Dave moves down to number 6.

Why a Pro Mod? That’s what everyone wants to know. The answer isn’t because he specifically wanted a Pro Mod, it’s because he wanted a car that was as light as possible and very aerodynamic. A Pro Mod just happens to fill those criteria. “It’s an evolution,” Justin said. People were starting to bring cars like this out to race us on the show. I needed to evolve, and the plans for something like this were in the works before the crash.” The crash just sped up the timeline. “When I was looking for a car, the only condition my wife gave me was that it had to be light. She saw how much work I had to put in to shed weight or move weight around the car, doing everything I could think of to make The Crow compete against lighter cars wanting to line up next to me.” He added, “It’s evolution. If you’re not growing, you’re dying.”

As this is happening, word gets out about changes in the 405. Pro mods, like Big Chief’s Crowmod, are out. The boys are getting back to basics and real street racing with real cars. That leaves several teams scrambling and makes some new favorites to move up the list.

Synopsis: The Street Beast was all over the road, losing control and throwing Doc into the curb. With his car out of commission, Dave absent, and Kamikaze running low on nitrous Chief was able to slide into the number 5 slot to challenge Ryan.

At the time of our shoot, the new Crowmod had yet to run under it’s own power, as Justin and his crew at Midwest Street Cars were feverishly putting the final pieces on the car to get it ready to run in the Radial vs. The World class at Duck X Productions’ Lights Out 7 radial race at South Georgia Motorsports Park on February 18, less than a month from now. We will be there to cover the action, of course. Filming for the next season of Street Outlaws will begin in March, so fans, critics, and keyboard warriors alike won’t have long to wait so see how the new car stacks up against the fastest racers from across the country.

Samuel Huist is easily the tallest member (6-feet 5-inches) of the The News Wheel team. He enjoys listening to hip-hop music and loves watching NBA basketball. Sam is also a Dayton, Ohio native and doesn’t seem to mind that distinction as much anymore. His first car was a 1996 Ford Taurus he could barely fit in. Like many young folks, he seemed more concerned about the radio in his first car than actually doing the work to maintain an automobile, so sadly it’s no longer with us. See more articles by Samuel.

After showing JJ and the Memphis crew what for, the guys from OKC are back doing what they do best: racing to get to the top of the list. This week saw Chief and Murder Nova plotting how they’re gonna get to the top of the list. Meanwhile, AZN took on a powerful McLaren.

Synopsis: The Crowmod started out strong, but had too much power down the track. It became a very close race as The Reaper nearly caught up, but Chief managed to pull it off in the end.

Shearer showed off his new racing vehicle, a Pontiac Firebird Pro Mod, at the PRI (Performance Racing Industry) Trade Show. Shearer was able to salvage the engine and transmission from his previous Pontiac and equipped both pieces inside his new car, which he’s given the nickname the “Crowmod.”

In addition to meeting strict goals for weight and aero, Justin gives equal importance to safety. “This new car is lighter, faster, and safer,” he said. The chassis was built by Terry Murphy and Blake Housely, of Terry Murphy Race Cars of Kansas City, Missouri, and few compromises were made, from the maze of cromoly tubing, to extensive use of titanium and carbon fiber parts. The body is all carbon fiber, as well, and Justin hopes that the Crowmod will weigh in at 2,300 pounds ready-to-run on the starting line, a full 1,000 pounds less than The Crow.

Standing before the expansive, swoopy body of the Crowmod, I wasn’t sure where to begin the interview; there was so much to take in. I began with the crash. “Yes, crashing sucked,” Justin Shearer replied, referring to the incident last November during filming for an episode of Street Outlaws. Brian Davis’ Mustang crossed the center and smacked the quarter panel of The Crow, Justin’s famous 1972 LeMans. Like on COPS when a perp gets taken out by the PIT maneuver, it sent The Crow careening into a ditch at more than 100 mph. The car was a total loss, and Justin barely survived the crash, sustaining compression fractures in two vertebrae, a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, and a dislocated shoulder. The pain continues to this day, and Justin’s not sure it will ever completely subside.

If you’re wondering what a pro-mod car is, according to Jegs, Pro Mod cars are full-bodied, left-hand driver vehicles which are very loosely based on production models. They also feature supercharged, turbocharged or nitrous oxide equipped engines that allow them to run deep into the five-second zone at speeds of over 258-mph.
