Sports cars and value don’t usually go together, but the Toyota 86 is an exception to that rule, and an exceptionally fun one at that. Formerly known as the Scion FR-S, this 2-door coupe brings an injection of excitement to the parent Toyota brand after it wound down its Scion unit. While this compact sports car has a new name, its objective remains: Provide a sports-car experience at a price within reach of ordinary buyers. Developed with Subaru (the 86 is a twin to the BRZ), this Toyota packs a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that drives the rear wheels. In an age when even cars that call themselves sporty are front-wheel drive, the 86’s rear-wheel-drive configuration alone gives it an edge, but it’s hardly the only trait that appeals to driving enthusiasts. The 2017 Toyota 86’s light weight, low center of gravity and performance suspension make it an excellent corner carver. Then there’s the transmission. While a 6-speed automatic is optional and pleasing enough, the 6-speed manual is the one to get for the most driver engagement. As we found in our full review, the 86 is “a quick, lightweight and genuinely fun sports car that should make any driving enthusiast happy. It has a tossability that’s rare in today’s cars, and although it’s not very fast, the taut suspension lets you carry speed into a corner unlike nearly anything at its price point.” With its 2+2 seating, standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, fuel economy of up to 32 mpg and starting price of just over $27,000, the 2017 Toyota 86 proves performance and value can go hand in hand.

We know a sports car when we drive one—it’s the one that puts a big grin across our mugs, and begs to be driven more. And although some of the cars on our list are pricey, we believe that each of these sports cars are full of value for the money – relative to the price range you’re currently shopping.

Everybody loves a good deal, right? The best sports cars for the money all have one thing in common, they deliver more in the way of driving pleasure than you’d expect given their asking prices. From our perspective the traits of a great sports car are sharp handling, a free winding engine, terrific brakes, and a delightful engine note. Everything a sports car delivers over and above those attributes, we consider gravy. Yes, good looks, a well-crafted interior, and useful comfort and convenience features are on our list of things to appreciate as well. But if the sheer, unalloyed excitement of strong dynamics isn’t there, who cares? And, if you can get them at a great price—that’s even better.

10 Best Used Sports Cars – 08 – 2005-2006 BMW M3 Page 1 of 12 10 Best Used Sports Cars – 08 – 2005-2006 BMW M3 Why are we going back so far to bring you a BMW M3 on our list of the best used sports car? It’s simple, really: the naturally-aspirated straight-six found in the E46 generation BMW M3 was a sweetheart of an engine, and 2005-2006 were the last two years of production for this model. The M3 coupe’s 3.2-liter motor is good for 333 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, and while an SMG automated manual transmission was available, we recommend sticking with the less-troublesome six-speed manual gearbox that was standard with the car. Like all M3’s, these ones feature quick steering, a reinforced and track-friendly suspension system, and unique styling cues that set it apart from other versions of the BMW 3 Series.

10 Best Used Sports Cars – 07 – 2007-2012 Mazda RX-8 Page 1 of 12 10 Best Used Sports Cars – 07 – 2007-2012 Mazda RX-8 The 2007 to 2012 Mazda RX-8 is intended to appeal to used sports car fans who aren’t afraid to be different. Not only does the Mazda RX-8 feature a 1.3-liter rotary engine in place of a standard piston-driven unit (generating 232 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission), but it also comes with an extra pair of rear-hinged doors to make it that much easier to access the coupe’s back seat. Revving the Mazda engine to its 9,000 rpm redline is a rare thrill, and the car’s light and tossable chassis makes it a lot of fun to drive hard on a twisty road.

More on Sports Cars Sports cars that don’t cost as much as a house tend to come in two primary categories. Small, lightweight sports cars with four-cylinder engines are designed to deliver excellent handling and agility rather than outright speed and power. Muscle cars, on the other hand, are heavier and have more powerful engines. No matter which type of sports car you’re shopping for, you shouldn’t have trouble finding one that delivers thrills without breaking the bank. Back to top
